Analysis of Dalian Forging Processes: Application Scenarios of Hot Forging, Cold Forging and Warm Forging
Forging is a core processing technology for heavy machinery, shipbuilding and mining equipment. As a key equipment manufacturing base in Northeast China, Dalian has extensive forging processing demands covering large heavy-duty parts and precision mechanical components. According to processing temperature, forging technologies are mainly divided into three categories: hot forging, cold forging and warm forging. They differ significantly in forming capacity, dimensional accuracy, surface quality and mechanical properties. Accurate differentiation of process characteristics and applicable scenarios is essential for improving forging quality and controlling production costs.
Hot forging is the mainstream process for heavy-duty forging in Dalian, performed above the metal recrystallization temperature (950℃–1250℃ for steel materials). High temperature greatly improves metal ductility and reduces deformation resistance, which thoroughly refines grain structure, eliminates casting porosity, and effectively enhances the toughness and structural strength of forgings. Suitable for large-size, large-deformation and complex-structured heavy components, it is widely applied in marine main shafts, mining machinery shells, wind power parts and large gear blanks, serving as the preferred process for heavy equipment and customized non-standard forgings in Dalian. Its main drawback is oxide scale generated at high temperature, resulting in lower surface accuracy and requiring subsequent finishing processing.


Cold forging is a room-temperature forming process without high-temperature heating. It produces non-oxidized workpieces with high dimensional accuracy and superior surface finish. The continuous metal fiber structure greatly improves workpiece hardness and wear resistance while ensuring high material utilization. Cold forging is ideal for small, simple-structured and high-precision standard parts such as bolts, pin shafts, precision bushings and small transmission components. It adapts to mass production needs of precision machinery and auto parts in Dalian, effectively reducing subsequent machining procedures and material loss costs.
Warm forging is carried out at medium temperatures ranging from 300℃ to 800℃, balancing the advantages of hot and cold forging. It avoids the high forming resistance and cracking risks of cold forging while improving the low accuracy and severe oxidation defects of hot forging, delivering stable forming, moderate precision and excellent overall cost performance. It is mainly used for medium-sized and medium-precision parts including automotive gears, medium transmission components and engineering machinery connectors. Dalian forging manufacturers can flexibly select the optimal process according to workpiece size, precision requirements and operating conditions to achieve the best balance of accuracy, strength and production cost.
