What is the Difference Between Open‑Die Forging and Closed‑Die Forging? Analysis of Dalian Forging Processing
Open‑die forging and closed‑die forging are two mainstream processes for forging production. Supported by the local heavy‑industry foundation, Dalian forging enterprises can flexibly adopt either process according to product dimensions, batch volume and performance requirements. Obvious differences exist in forming principles, product characteristics and applicable scenarios.
Open‑die forging applies pressure to metal blanks through forging hammers or hydraulic presses without fixed forming dies. Shaping is completed step‑by‑step via manual operation. Featuring high process flexibility and low die investment, it is suitable for single‑piece and small‑batch large‑size heavy forgings such as large‑sized shafts, cylinders and lifting lug blanks. Nevertheless, open‑die forging delivers relatively low production efficiency with larger dimensional tolerances and ordinary surface finish, and highly relies on operators’ skills. It is widely used for large critical forgings of shipbuilding and petrochemical equipment.

Closed‑die forging adopts prefabricated dedicated dies. Blanks are pressed and formed in die cavities in one stroke. It provides high forming accuracy, regular contours, uniform grain structure and excellent product consistency with much higher productivity than open‑die forging. It fits mass‑produced small‑and‑medium‑sized forgings including construction‑machinery pin shafts, gear blanks and flanges. However, closed‑die forging requires high upfront die‑making costs, and product dimensions are constrained by dies, making it more suitable for standardized volume orders.
For actual Dalian forging processing selection, manufacturers comprehensively evaluate project budget, order quantity, product specifications and mechanical‑performance indicators. Open‑die forging is preferred for large‑size custom single‑piece projects, while closed‑die forging is selected for bulk orders demanding high dimensional accuracy and surface quality. Both processes can be combined with heat treatment, non‑destructive testing and machining to meet national standards and classification‑society specifications.
Local Dalian forging factories are capable of both open‑die and closed‑die forging. Custom forgings of carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel are available, delivering one‑stop forging solutions for offshore engineering, petrochemical, mining and wind‑power clients.
