What is Forging Process? Brief Introduction to Forging Principle
Forging is an important metal plastic forming process in machinery manufacturing, and a core processing method for producing high-end mechanical parts. Unlike turning and casting, forging applies external impact or compression force to metal blanks to produce plastic deformation, so as to obtain forgings with specified shape, dimension and mechanical properties. It is widely used in engineering machinery, automobiles, rail transit, wind power, aerospace and other fields with strict requirements for strength and safety.
The basic working principle of forging takes advantage of the plasticity of metal at room or high temperature. Hammers, presses and other equipment exert continuous pressure or instantaneous impact force on metal blanks, forcing the internal grains of metal to rearrange and the fibrous structure to extend continuously. During deformation, original defects such as porosity, blowholes and shrinkage cavities inside the metal are compacted and closed. The structure becomes denser and more uniform, greatly improving the overall strength, toughness and fatigue resistance of the material. This is the key reason why forgings have far better comprehensive performance than castings.

According to processing methods, forging is mainly divided into open-die forging and closed-die forging. Open-die forging uses simple tools to hammer and extrude blanks freely. It features flexible forming and suits large, single and heavy forgings. Closed-die forging adopts high-precision dies to restrict metal flow and enable materials to fill the cavity accurately. It delivers high dimensional accuracy and good consistency, suitable for mass production of complex precision parts. Classified by temperature, it includes hot forging, warm forging and cold forging to match different material and precision requirements.
The biggest advantage of forging is the improvement of metal mechanical properties. Workpieces after forging have continuous and intact internal metal fibers, strong bearing capacity, impact resistance and fracture resistance. They can withstand heavy loads, alternating loads and complex working conditions for a long time. Compared with ordinary cutting processing, forging saves materials and improves efficiency. It fundamentally optimizes the metal structure to ensure stable operation and long service life of parts, serving as an indispensable basic process for high-end equipment manufacturing.
